14 May 2014 International tourism generates US$ 1.4 trillion in export earnings
Total export earnings generated by international tourism in 2013 reached US$ 1.4 trillion. Receipts earned by destinations from international visitors grew by 5% to reach US$ 1159 billion, while an additional US$ 218 billion was earned by international passenger transport.
13 May 2014 UNWTO cautions against potential tourism tax in Africa
UNWTO Secretary-General, Taleb Rifai, has expressed serious concerns about the negative impact that a new tourism tax on air passengers and hotel guests in Africa, currently being discussed among members of the African Union, would have on Africa´s tourism sector. Tourism is one of the main contributors to Africa’s balance of payments, a source of livelihood for millions in the continent and one of the sectors where the region has a major competitive advantage in international markets.
7 May 2014 Air connectivity key to seizing Africa’s tourism potential
UNWTO African Members States, gathered on the occasion of the 56th Meeting of the UNWTO Commission for Africa, highlighted the need to have better coordination between tourism and air transport policies to fully explore the tourism sector’s capacity to deliver on growth and development in the continent. The meeting also discussed the on-going poaching crisis in Africa and its negative impact on tourism (28-30 April 2014, Luanda, Angola).
28 April 2014 UNWTO calls for increased support for tourism in the development agenda
UNWTO called for higher support to tourism in international aid flows as to maximize the growing contribution of the sector to socio-economic development. The case for tourism’s higher prioritization in the development agenda was made during the Focus Session ‘Tourism as an Engine for Growth and Development’ held at the First High-Level Meeting of the Global Partnership for Effective Development Co-operation [1] (Mexico City, Mexico, 15-16 April 2014).

10 March 2014 UNWTO, UNODC and African Tourism Ministers to join forces to fight wildlife crime
UNWTO, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), and African Tourism Ministers have committed to advancing the tourism sector’s support in the global fight against the surge in poaching that is threatening one of Africa’s main tourism resources - its unique wildlife and biodiversity. 5 March 2014 UNWTO, UNODC and UNESCO launch anti-trafficking campaign
The World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) have joined forces to promote a global campaign urging travellers to support the fight against a number of forms of trafficking. The Campaign was presented to the tourism sector at the International Tourism Bourse (ITB) in Berlin (5 March 2014).
11 February 2014 UNWTO contributes to Korean presidential debate on new tourism plan
Chairing the Tourism Promotion Meeting in Seoul, the President of the Republic of Korea, Park Geun-hye, unveiled plans to advance tourism promotion by boosting ‘smart tourism’, encouraging more nationals to travel and promoting capacity building in support of job creation. UNWTO Secretary-General, Taleb Rifai, addressed the Meeting and underscored the country’s lead in connecting state-of-the-art tourism initiatives with the sector’s potential to face poverty challenges and provide development opportunities (3 February 2014, Seoul, Republic of Korea).
